Building the Future: The Biggest Construction Projects of 2018

After taking down our Christmas lights and reflecting on the year gone by, most of us now look forward into the New Year with hopes of new ventures, transformations and opportunities – and if you work in construction you’ll be thinking about what’s in store for your upcoming projects.

The year 2018 is going to see some ambitious builds in the UK, with the likes of football stadiums, shopping centres and huge office developments being among those that have been given the green light. It is also expected that a final decision will be reached on the possible demolition of Grenfell Tower, potentially the most sensitive and high-profile construction topic of the past year.

Structuring Stadiums

Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium is set to embark on its most technically challenging aspect in January 2018 – the lifting of its gigantic 600 tonne roof. The state of the art new ground will boast a five-story glass atrium for fans, complete with a food court. The home stand will be a single tier of 17,500 seats which will create a ‘wall of sound’, placing fans closer to the pitch than any other stadium of comparable size. For fans and the public alike, it will also feature a 40 metre high Sky Walk up to the viewing deck on the roof. With a colossal capacity of 61,559, the stadium will also play host to NFL games and other entertainment.

Brand New Big Ben

New Year’s Eve heard the first songs of Big Ben since the summer of 2017, which had fallen silent due to the work being undertaken to renovate the Elizabeth Tower. A debate is set for the 11th of January in the House of Commons to discuss the future of the Palace of Westminster project, after years of delay.

Versace, Versace, Versace

Multiplex is to be the main contractor for the 50 storey tower Aykon London One in Nine Elms. They’ve taken on the job for £240m for the high-end, luxury residential project with apartments being designed in conjunction with Versace Home. The opulent residences are the latest in a string of high-profile wins for Multiplex and is just down the road from another of their major developments, One Nine Elms.

Ever Growing Edinburgh

Work is expected to continue in earnest in 2018 on Edinburgh’s largest speculative office development, Capital Square. Bam Properties and Hermes International have both heavily invested in the project, with its success hinging on the idea that Edinburgh’s property market and commercial sector remain thriving after uncertainty following the Brexit vote and questions about Scottish Independence.

Your Business in 2018

Whether you’re looking to build your own construction company this year or continue on with existing projects, you’ll no doubt be planning for the year ahead to make sure your business has a prosperous and profitable 2018.

Investing in a vehicle tracking system is a great way to safeguard your company vans and plant, but it also means you’ll save money on your fuel bills and benefit from reduced repair costs too.  With an iTrack system from Phantom, you’ll be able to track and remotely immobilise any stolen vehicles, monitor driver behaviour, and plan your routes effectively – leading to a more economical year in terms of fuel efficiency and reducing your company’s carbon footprint.

A tracking system will also cut your insurance premium and help you keep an accurate log of your mileage.

If you’re a start-up or an established firm and are looking for ways to build your construction company in 2018, call 0161 476 4050 to discuss how a tracking system from Phantom can help you.

Testimonials

Very soon after our second meeting with Phantom, it was clear that a deal would be made between County Car & Van Rental and Phantom. It was only left to negotiate to what level. Phantom are now our only vehicle tracker supplier taking precedence over existing vehicle tracker contracts.

Phantom arranged for County to take on a small number of units initially on a trial basis, he has been always readily contactable to assist with any queries and assisted with any development issues that County have requested.

I have nothing but praise to say about the team at Phantom and foresee a very happy partnership moving forward in the future between County Car & Van Rental and Phantom."

County Car & Van Rental

You will no doubt recall our original conversations earlier in the year and the fact that as a result we recently purchased x2 vehicle tracking devices for x2 of our new, replacement vans.

I just wanted to take this opportunity firstly to thank you personally for your initial advice & guidance with regard to purchasing this tracking system, but in particular I wanted to let you know how pleased and impressed we are with the performance and capabilities of the system which I have to say has by far exceeded our expectations.

The system has been most beneficial and is used on a daily basis to monitor and track the performance and progress of our vehicles in a positive way.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Phantom to anyone considering these requirements."
