Willmott Dixon break ground on £45M Benenden Hospital redevelopment
Benenden Hospital redevelopment gets underway
Spades were put to the ground in Kent this week by representatives at Benenden Hospital and Willmott Dixon Construction to mark the beginning of construction work on the Hospital’s new building.
The two and a half year development will transform the hospital into a state-of-the-art first-class facility poised to meet future healthcare needs of local people. The hospital caters for members of Benenden Health, private patients and NHS Choose and Book patients.
The raising of ceremonial soil was carried out by hospital director Jane Abbot, the chair of Benenden Hospital’s Board of Governers Graham Hadfield and Willmott Dixon Construction’s Robert Douglas, among others.
The work will include the development of a glass roofed reception area to provide patients and visitors with a relaxation area and class leading catering facilities. Construction is expected to be carried out in phases between now and December 2016.
Hospital director Jane Abbott said: “The start of this major redevelopment marks an exciting new chapter in the 107-year history of the hospital.
“The result will see the hospital becoming a state-of-the-art first-class facility which will offer increased services to our private and NHS patients, as well as ensuring we meet the needs of benenden health members through the delivery of high quality patient care.”
Chair of the Hospital’s Board of Governors Graham Hadfield OBE added: “We’re proud of our long history of delivering first class healthcare services and the redevelopment ensures that this will be safeguarded for our future patients for many years to come.
The redevelopment will transform benenden hospital into a leading centre for health and wellbeing. It will result in single bedrooms throughout, a new main entrance with adjacent car park and drop off area, scanning and diagnostic imaging all under one roof, an expansion of the outpatient area, modernisation of theatres, a new endoscopy unit and considerable refurbishment throughout.
Willmott Dixon’s John Waterman said “We are delighted to have marked the beginning of this project with the time honoured groundbreaking ceremony. Benenden hospital is already an exceptional institute of healthcare, and with our expertise the hospital will be able to boast state-of-the-art facilities for many years to come.”
