DRS Data Services are a specialist electronic data capture company who specialise in the logisitics of marking exam papers, and also work worldwide collecting data for elections and census’s. In the UK, they are responsible for the scanning of Exam Papers after they have come from the candidates and are the link in the chain to the marking process. After they are scanned, an internet portal access system allows the markers to grade the papers.

As you can imagine, during exam “season” there is an enormous amount of paper stored in their premises. This combined with the large amount of paper dust that is created when the paperwork is cut for scanning makes for an enormous fire risk. None of this paperwork is duplicated so if it was lost in a fire then so would everybody’s exam results as well!

The premises that DRS are in, are not suitable for a Gas Suppression System due to room integrity issues, which would normally be suggested for an Archive Store such as this, so the decision was taken to protect the premises and content with a FirePro® condensed aerosol system. Working with DRS’s management, a plan for installation and commissioning was drawn up – to make sure that we didn’t clash with the start of their busy marking season.

A total of 86 FirePro® FP5700S units were installed which on activation emit a Potassium Salt. An added advantage of FirePro® is that it is not dependent upon the rooms integrity to work correctly. This salt chemically reacts with the fire, stopping any combustion from taking place and cooling the source of heat. FirePro® has the following advantages over a traditional gas system for a space such as this:

  • No Integrity Testing required – Ever
  • No Stored Pressure, so no weekly cylinder pressure checks
  • 15 Year lifetime compared with 10 years for gas
  • No footprint, pipework or nozzles to consider
  • Reduced install time
  • Reduced lifetime costs
  • Cost effective initial install

The FirePro is triggered by a Fire Detection system which is both Cross Zoned and Coincidence wired, which looks for a smoke detection signal from two detectors before the FirePro® activates. Most of the FirePro® generators were roof mounted to ensure an even distribution of the FirePro® mist, with a few of them installed on the walls to balance up the discharged mist density.
