Smart lighting at its best

It does lighting ltd based in Milton Keynes have just installed a full circadian lighting system to their own offices. Principle Lighting Designer and Director of it does lighting, Lorraine Calcott, is researching this ground breaking way of lighting interior spaces to best mimic daylight and says of the decision “We like to practice what we preach and lighting to benefit the health and well-being of our staff is of utmost importance to us. My team and I are thrilled to be one of the first offices able to install this type of lighting and our research into Circadian lightings benefits will now be monitored during our own working day. If a space has to be lit anyway why not use the best and most natural form of artificial light there is and provide a more holistic approach to light and nurturing one of our body’s most basic biological needs.”

The product which it does lighting used was the Halcyon-lighting.co.uk “Lux Loop” circadian luminaire which fits easily into a 600 x 600 lay in tile. The effect was instantly an improvement from the previous fluorescent cat 2 lights which provided harsh static white light. The whole space changed from cold severe lighting to something warm and pleasant to work in. The other benefits are that each light is individually addressable and can be dimmed or switched off independently of each other. So energy can be saved from only using the lights that are needed and by the reduction in overall wattage from the 4 x 18 watt that preceded it to a system wattage of only 41.4watts. In addition they can provide each person within the space with the means to select a preference or to have a hit of blue enriched light after lunch should they be feeling sluggish.

We looked at different options when deciding which product to use for our own offices but the Halcyon luminaire really gave us all we needed in a sensible price bracket and with the functionality we required. We shall keep you posted on how our smart intelligent daylighting system works for us but so far we are very excited about using it and feeling energised in the process of our day to day working life since its installation.
