GE returns to Bryland Fire to protect their latest acquisition

Following a very successful install in their on-site server room, GE took the decision to protect their latest asset – two Diesel Generators – that have been very recently installed at the site. As with the previous install, it was entrusted to Bryland Fire.

The two brand new generators are enclosed in an acoustic enclosure and are a new addition to site. As they are a necessity for the running of their process, then the generators’ duty has to be guaranteed.

After careful consideration of the chemical composition of NOVEC 1230 by the Generator manufacturer, it was passed with flying colours for use in the generator enclosure and Bryland then designed the system for the enclosure.

Bryland Fire commissioned TYCO to manufacture a NOVEC 1230 system that consisted of 1 x 180 Litre cylinder containing 139 Kg of NOVEC 1230 from 3M.

An added issue with the Generator Enclosure was that it needed to “breathe”, ie: there needs to be an airflow through the enclosure in order to keep the generators cool. This causes an issue of course with sealing and integrity of the room. This was combatted by fitted automated dampers onto both the airflow intake and exhaust to the enclosure, that are closed before the NOVEC 1230 gas is discharged in the enclosure.

Chris Wright, who project managed the install for Bryland, said: “Quite a challenging project this one – the automatic damper closing was an added complication but it was all connected, tested and commissioned and works perfectly. The NOVEC 1230 system only using one cylinder was also an advantage as there is very little space inside the enclosure. The single cylinder was installed outside of the enclosure and the pipework fed through to the inside of the enclosure to its discharge pipework and nozzles.”
