New driving test changes aim to make test more realistic
The UK driving test is changing – There will be four key changes to the driving test that will come into force from December.
What’s changing with the UK Driving Test?
The UK driving test as we know it will be getting a overhaul come December. Four key changes will be made in an aim to bring the driving test into the 21st Century. Over the years, very little has been changed with the driving test apart from the introduction of independent driving in 2010.
The new plans by the DVSA plans to update the driving test in a way that mirrors current driving habits. Nearly half of UK motorists have sat navs in their car, either in an infotainment system or a removable one, and this is one of the four key changes that will come into force from December.
2017 Driving Test: Four key changes
- ‘Independent driving’ to be increased from 10 to 20 minutes.
- Candidates will follow directions on a sat nav rather than following road signs.
- Manoeuvres to be changed to reflect real life scenarios. E.g. Reversing out of a parking bay.
- Vehicle safety questions may be asked whilst the candidate is driving. E.g. Asking candidates to operate rear heated windscreen.
Most aspects of the test have stayed the same, learner drivers will still be given the traditional eyesight test before they get behind the wheel and start their test, and one of the safety questions will still be asked when they get in the car with their examiner.
Learners will still be allowed to bring their driving instructor with them during the test if they wish to do so.
Gaeth Llwellyn, Chief Executive of the DVSA said:
“DVSA’s priority is to help you through a lifetime of safe driving.
“Making sure the driving test better assesses a driver’s ability to drive safely and independently is part of our strategy to help you stay safe on Britain’s roads.
“It’s vital that the driving test keeps up to date with new vehicle technology and the areas where new drivers face the greatest risk once they’ve passed their test.”
The new driving test changes will come into force from the 4th December 2017.
