National construction centre to be build in Wolverhampton
12 Jun 19

The new national construction centre will be built in the University of Wolverhampton’s Springfield campus.
The construction centre will combine the current West Midlands Construction University Technical College and the Elite Centre for Manufacturing Skills Hub and be based at the University of Wolverhampton’s Springfield Campus. The National Centre for Construction and Development Excellence has been announced by the West Midlands Combined Authority led by Mayor Andy Street.
The National Brownfield Institute will be Europe’s largest construction and built environment hub when it is complete. The centre will offer training to those new to construction as well as professionals and teach modern building techniques including drone surveying and robotic construction.
Mayor Andy Street said: “The Black Country and its coal was at the forefront of the industrial revolution in the 1800s. Now, in the 21st century, it is time the region reclaimed its place as a world leader in construction.”
“In establishing this centre, which will focus around Wolverhampton’s Springfield Campus, students will be able to learn state of the art construction techniques and apply them to derelict brownfield sites across the region.”
“By regenerating run down former industrial land using brand new skills and techniques, our workers will become the envy of the world. Soon our experts from across the Black Country will be in demand in China and Dubai, remediating polluted sites and building skyscrapers.”
A task force has been set up to complete the building with the first task being to review the Springfield campus and see what facilities are required. The centre will include a School of Architecture and the Built Environment and has been set as a top priority by the local authority.
