Pier regeneration plans move forward

The proposed multimillion-pound transformation of Scarborough’s historic West Pier has moved forward with the submission of a planning application.North Yorkshire Council has submitted full planning application and listed building applications for the regeneration of Scarborough Harbour West Pier, following a public consultation last year.The plans cover the renovation of some existing buildings, demolition of poorer quality buildings and provision of new fisheries infrastructure, as well as improvements to the public realm.Work will include the construction of new facilities and improved welfare for the local fishing fleet.Plans also include a seafood restaurant to increase opportunities to highlight locally caught produce, and a new public space, which could be used for outdoor events and cultural activities.New kiosks, parking and vehicle and pedestrian management, better offices, sheds and warehousing for the fishing sector and new public toilets would also be provided.Once complete, the proposed development is expected to support 82 net additional jobs and generate an additional £3.28m of direct gross value added (GVA).It is also expected to bring benefits for the seaside town’s fishing industry, businesses, residents and visitors.A planning statement submitted as part of the application said: “There is a need to provide modern fisheries to protect existing industry, support growth and to diversify the harbour’s output. The operating harbour is the anchor for all activity at the pier therefore it is essential to secure its continued use. The new facilitates will be able to support enhanced operations such as infrastructure for a lobster hatchery and better cold storage.”Improving the Pier’s infrastructure including upgrading flood resilience, drainage and power supply and lighting will help future proof the development by putting in the necessary facilities to support a cleaner and greener port operation.”Improvements to the design of the working harbour area are expected to contribute to increas ing industry and local Gross Domestic Product (GDP), therefore, building on the Scarborough Harbour West Pier Redevelopment North Yorkshire Council existing circular economy of the Pier. The proposed development will support existing jobs and create additional ones.”The West Pier proposals are supported by Towns Fund backing awarded to Scarborough in 2021.
