Durham University upgrades paths and cycleways

The British branch of the global contractor company Colas has been appointed by Durham University to upgrade pedestrian pathways and road user networks around the university campus as part of an £8M contract.

According to recent projections, the number of students that will be attending Durham University in 2027 will reach a total of 21,500, meaning that a much higher number of people will be using footpaths and cycleways in travelling between classes.

This increase in the volume of people using footpaths in turn means that there will be a higher likelihood of accident or injury if the capacity of these paths and cycleways is not expanded so, following a successful consultation in the April and May of 2018, the university decided to dedicate some spending to the widening of these networks.

The project itself commenced on the 2^nd December 2019 and will begin with the widening of the footpath between the Whitechurch Junction and the Bill Bryson Library, also entailing the installation of LED lighting along pathways and the establishment of a 215 space car park.

The Director of Estates and Facilities at Durham University, David Loudon stated: “The safety of our staff, students, visitors and members of the public is of utmost importance to us, so we are pleased to be starting work on our infrastructure improvements project, which will bring major benefits for our staff and students and local residents alike.

“We hope this project will help more people choose sustainable travel; and are proud that it will bring improvements for biodiversity and nature conservation, helping keep the city we share such a beautiful place to live, work, study and visit.”

The Chief Executive Officer of Colas, Carl Fergusson added: “We are delighted to be working in close collaboration with Durham University and to deliver an attractive infrastructure solution which is sustainable and sensitive to this wonderful city.”
