Kier Highways Mobilises £160m Contract

Kier Highways has completed the mobilisation of its new eight-year £160 million Highways England Area 4 Maintenance and Response contract.
The mobilisation period took place over three months and the contract covers Kent, East Sussex and West Sussex. Kier will also be responsible for maintaining 130km of motorway, (M2, M20 and M23), 320km of trunk roads and more than 1000 structures including the Medway Viaducts, the A20 Roundhill Tunnel and the A27 Southwick Tunnel.
The contract includes routine, along with, cyclical maintenance, incident response, defect rectification and severe weather delivery on trunk roads and motorways that are within Area 4. It also includes the maintenance of roadside technology along with the provision of traffic management for the contractor’s maintenance and response activities.
Phil Samms, Area 4 General Manager, said: “The relatively short three-month mobilisation of Area 4 M&R has been delivered in difficult circumstances and the success is testament to the excellent relationships already forged between Kier, Highways England and the supply chain. It has also been supported by the knowledge and experience of the existing staff in Area 4. Throughout the contract, collaborative working between Kier, Highways England and the supply chain will be key, and our focus will be on working safely, reliable delivery and meeting customer expectations.”

Kier Highways currently manages, maintains and improves more than 300km of local authority and strategic roads. In South East England region, it has recently completed construction of two motorway upgrade projects on the M20 (J3-5) and M23 (J8-10) which are now open to road users.
Kier operates three other Highways England maintenance contracts in Area 3 (South East), Area 9 (West Midlands) and Area 13 (North West).
