Lower Thames Crossing design update

As the public consultation process continues for the Lower Thames Crossing scheme, various updates to the design have been revealed in addition to new concept images from Highways England.

Going into more detail, the new Lower Thames Crossing designs reveal a direct access route between Gravesend and the A2/M2 as well as a completely redesigned Gravesend East Junction, complete with link roads to reduce any congestion, in addition to the removal of the Tilbury Junction.

Furthermore, the reconsidered plans display an extension to the Southern tunnel entrance at Gravesend combined with redesigned slip roads around the A13/A1089 Junction with these particular improvements to the design having been made to reduce impact upon local communities and the natural environment.

One last improvement to the design has also entailed the removal of one lane on the Southbound side of the carriageway between the M25 and A13 Junction in order to limit the amount of land that the project will require without compromising on benefits to the road’s capacity.

The Director of Highways England’s Complex Infrastructure Programme, Chris Taylor stated: “The Lower Thames Crossing is Highways England’s most ambitious project in 30 years, designed to improve journeys across the South East and open up new connections and opportunities for people and businesses.

“Getting the views of the local community and businesses is crucial to designing a project that will offer the best value, maximise the benefits for all, while reducing the impact on local communities and the environment. This consultation is a chance for people to review and comment on a number of changes made since our last consultation in 2018, and to help shape this once-in-a-generation project.”

The Lower Thames Crossing itself will consist of a 14.3 mile long tunnel extending underneath the River Thames to the East of London in order to connect Essex, Thurrock, and Kent.
