Westferry Printworks development proposal submitted

A planning application has been submitted for a new waterfront mixed use development on the site of the former Westferry Printworks in London.

If approved, the Westferry Printworks development will deliver more that 1,500 new homes alongside retail offerings, restaurants, workplaces, open spaces and two new parks. The proposal itself has been submitted by Westferry Developments Limited to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, following a period of extensive consultation with statutory bodies, key stakeholders, councillors, neighbours and the wider community.

In August 2016, the former Westferry Printworks masterplan received initial planning consent for a residential-led mixed use development accommodating 722 new homes, and – in the two years since – the site has been cleared ready for construction.

The new planning application forms a response to the recent London Plan however, which identified The Isle of Dogs as an area in need of substantial investment to deliver more affordable homes across the capital. The Mayor of London has called for around 66,000 new homes to be built each year, with Tower Hamlets having an individual target of over 3,500. The new scheme will not only provide more homes but also aims to deliver 35% affordable housing – three and half times more than the previous application.

In total, the 15-acre site will accommodate 1,540 new private and affordable homes which will be available to buy or rent. By increasing the height of the proposed buildings and integrating an additional structure on-site, additional housing has been promised. The principles of the original masterplan to create a vibrant new waterfront neighbourhood and wide range of amenities have been preserved where possible however.

Westferry Developments Limited is being assisted on the project by Mace as Development Manager. According to Mike Myles, Development Director at Mace: “The submission of a new planning application for Westferry Printworks to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets is a real statement of intent that aligns itself with both the needs of the local community and the delivery of new and affordable homes for Londoners. We are extremely proud to be part of this flagship scheme that will contribute significantly to the enhancement of this area, whilst fully aligning with the London Plan.”
