What went up must come down

The stack on top of the First Generation Reprocessing Plant at Sellafield, West Cumbria, played an important part in keeping the lights on. But now its mission is over, and the stack must come down. The stack was built in the 1950s and doesn’t meet modern safety standards. It’s replacement is now doing the job of safely ventilating our plants. However, removing the stack is a difficult project, and one which perfectly illustrates the challenges of decommissioning on a congested nuclear site.
