Railway Industry Association
About Us
The Railway Industry Association has been the representative body for UK-based suppliers of equipment and services to the world-wide rail industry since it was established in 1971. Currently standing at a membership of 180 companies active across the range of railway suppliers it has experience of offering a range of professional services for a diverse range of members.
RIA members carry a number of skills and resources which were previously delivered as part of the national railway supply but now operate through the private sector. They represent the greater part of the UK railway supply industry by turnover with many large firms included in the members list, as well as a wide range of smaller companies.
RIA provides extensive services to its members, including:
- the provision of technical, commercial and political information every week
- representation of the supply industry’s interests to Government, Network Rail and others
- providing opportunities for dialogue and networking between members, including a number of Special Interest Groups
- supply chain improvement initiatives
- export promotional activity, through briefings, visits overseas, hosting inwards visits
- organising UK presence at exhibitions overseas.
The Railway Industry Association dates back to 1875. Formed by a number of independent steam locomotive builders it started life as a platform to petition Parliament. It was then known as the Locomotive Manufacturer's Association of Great Britain and proved to be very effective for promoting its member's interests. It was widened to include manufacturers of all forms of rolling stock which prompted a change of name to the Locomotive and Allied Manufacturers Association in 1957. Then, in 1971, the Railway Industry Association was borne due to the inclusion of all parts of the railway supply industry. With the break-up and privatisation of British Rail in the 1990s, many of the resulting supply-side companies joined Railway Industry Alliance as they moved into the private sector and membership has continued to grow.
