A £13m housing development is proposed for a former school site, regenerating unkempt land on the northern edge of Hull.A development of 188 low-cost homes is proposed on the former Sir Leo Schultz School site, on the northern border of the Orchard Park estate. It is expected to create 282 jobs, plus 752 indirect jobs in the supply chain, if planning permission is approved. The Danepark Road site is within East Riding Council’s boundary, so it will rule on the planning application lodged by Gleeson Development Limited.Hull City Council will be consulted for its views.Hull city councillor Steven Bayes, who represents Orchard Park and Greenwood ward, said the site has been disused since the start of the millennium and has been a target for antisocial behaviour.Cllr Bayes, who has not yet seen the plans, said the impact of the scheme on the local infrastructure, including roads and schools, would have to be looked at.A planning statement to accompany the application says developer Gleeson focuses on low-cost homes for people on low incomes in areas of industrial decline and social and economic deprivation.Houses would range from two- bedroom to four-bedroom at the six-hectare site, which was also previously the site of a multi-games area.At least 20 per cent of the properties could be bought through a help to buy scheme.Economic impacts of the scheme would include £806,554 financial assistance from Gleeson to the purchasers of the new homes.
