Plans in for mixed-use Caerphilly scheme
Plans have been submitted for a mixed-use development of up to 200 houses and about 70,000 sq ft of commercial space on a Welsh Government-owned site near Caerphilly.Ove Arup and Partners, the agent, on behalf of the Welsh Government, has submitted an application to Caerphilly County Borough Council for a scheme at Ty Du in Nelson.Under the plans, up to 200 houses could be built including about 50 affordable homes. The application also proposes 67,800 sq ft of B1 light industrial units, parking and public open space. The majority of the 47.44-acre site was acquired by the former Welsh Development Agency by compulsory purchase in 1999 and subsequently transferred to the Welsh ministers when the organisation was disbanded. It currently comprises a mix of uses including agricultural land, a disused sports ground and an area of material from the Nelson bypass construction works. The land is allocated in the Northern Connections Corridor of Caerphilly Council’s adopted local development plan (LDP) for a business park. Permission was previously been granted for this use in 2010, however this has now lapsed.
