Hotel expansion plans set for green light
Plans for the extension of St Mellons Country Club and Hotel, including 50 bedrooms and new conference facilities, are set to be approved at a planning committee meeting next week. The Tremorfa Group, which bought the hotel from a guide price of £1.2m in September 2014, submitted an application to Newport City Council earlier this year for the site, located between Newport and Cardiff. The hotel is situated within the St Mellons Golf Course, dates back to the 19th century, and was originally a private residence. At present, it features 39 bedrooms, spread across the main house and external chalets, plus a lounge, restaurant, bar, ballroom, spa, leisure centre and two commercial kitchens.Under the new proposals, part of the existing building will be demolished and an extension will be built to provide upgraded facilities for conferences and weddings.A total of 50 additional hotel rooms would be created, taking the total to 99, and a block of 20 chalets on the site would also be removed to make way for 18 log cabins. Provision for 99 onsite parking spaces is also included. The scheme will be considered at a meeting of Newport City Council’s planning committee on 3 August 2016 with councillors recommended to grant planning consent.
