II.1.4) Short description of the contract or purchase(s):
The Graphene Application Innovation Centre at the Centre for Process Innovation has the need to analyse materials (including graphene and other 2D materials, nano-scale material, pharmaceutical, life science and electronic) using Raman spectroscopy to provide key information regarding chemical composition and material structure. The addition of a motorised fully confocal microscope system to the Raman spectrometer will allow for ultra-fast confocal Raman mapping of samples on both a micro and macro scale thus significantly increasing the capability of the centre in this area. Current research areas require the instrument to be capable of the measurement of ultra-low frequency spectral data allowing greater resolution of spectra.
A device is required for the measurement of properties such as the friction, lubrication and wear over a wide range of surface contact and environmental conditions. In addition, the in situ analysis of the test performed, such as the appearance of a wear scar or the acoustic emission of a progressive scratch, is critical to understand the mechanisms involved. This can then be used to develop a fundamental understanding of the processes involved, resulting in the ability to design enhanced performance formulations.
The instrument required must be a flexible, bench top device with a high level of accuracy which can distinguish between small incremental changes in formulations. Parameters such as the temperature should be easily and accurately controlled and there must be options for measuring materials under liquid and dry conditions. A range of contact conditions and sizes much be accommodated.
Please note that associated consumables will also be part of this contract.
