Plans to establish a music venue on the outskirts of Sheffield city centre by refurbishing and renovating two historic buildings have been revealed. The properties comprise a former stables building and sick bay/infirmary, both of which were ancillary buildings to the former City Goods Station that was constructed in 1895.Serving the Nunnery Colliery coal mine and subsequently known as the Nunnery Goods Station, the site closed following the end of hostilities of the Second World War.Beyond the closure, the stables and sick bay/infirmary have “led something of a mixed life ever since” according to a planning statement. The latter has effectively never been utilised, while the former has been home to a number of small scale commercial uses. Now vacant, the application submitted by Time Architects hopes to “bring both buildings back into an economically and commercially viable use” as oppose to them being “empty and deteriorating as they have done for a number of years”.As such, the former stables are proposed to be used as a music venue while the sick bay/ infirmary would be utilised as an office facility for the owners of the site. The venue would be 5,000 sq ft and create a total of 25 jobs – five full-time and 20 part-time.Since taking ownership of the site, the owner has explored “a number of avenues” to bring the buildings back into use.Sheffield City Council is yet to confirm a decision date for the scheme.
