II.1.5) Short description of the specific contract:
The focus of the MFCIC is advanced materials for fuel cells. The University requires a suite of modular low power fuel cells units (PEM, SOFC, etc.) which can be used to test our materials and to conduct condition-monitoring experiments. A suite of cells and associated hydrogen generation facilities will also be required. These units will also be used in our teaching/training activities. A wide range of liquid and gaseous fuels can be reformed into hydrogen.
Our activities in this field will include:
i) exploring metallic and organic/inorganic catalyst materials produced via wet-chemical synthesis
ii) bimetallic catalysts will also be explored where the active nanomaterial is immobilised onto ‘larger’ micro materials which, results in greater surface areas but keep costs low;
iii) exploring a range of mesoporous oxides as heterogeneous catalysts with varying compositions, surface structure and functionality towards clean-up efficiency
iv) coating of identified catalysts onto a range of materials such as planar and 3D microstructures. A catalytic testing rig is required to measure the efficiency/effectiveness of our materials.

Lot No: 4; Lot title: Microwave plasma delivery system for CVD Graphene Rig
1) Short description: The CVD Graphene Rig is used to deposit thin films of graphene on metal foil or film substrates. These graphene layers will be used in the construction of novel fuel cell elements. We wish to produce vertically aligned graphene. However, the commercially available rigs offer no guarantee of producing graphene in this form. We have found references in the literature about using microwave power supplies to produce graphene in our desired form. In addition, we have most of the components needed to build a small rig already in house in my lab. We, therefore, propose that the rig is built in house (with minimal extra purchases to complete the rig) and that only a microwave plasma deliver system, consisting of a microwave generator and autotuner, are purchased, rather than the full rig that was originally envisaged. The power supply/generator will operate in the GHz frequency range and remotely generate a plasma in the reaction chamber. This plasma will excite gaseous species of H2 and CH4 and create the growth conditions necessary for the formation of vertically aligned graphene onto a substrate.

Lot No: 5; Lot title: Hydrogen Electrolyser
1) Short description: The electrolyser will be responsible for meeting the hydrogen demand of the fuel cell lab. Electrolysers use electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen via the following equation: H2O H2 + ½O2. Each mole of water requires a minimum of 237.13kJ of energy to split the water into hydrogen and oxygen, to give 2g of hydrogen and 16g of oxygen.
