Energy 2050 based at the Awarding Authority is one of the UK’s largest energy research initiatives with over 120 academics and more than 250 PhD students undertaking energy research and innovation. The energy 2050 group integrates all aspects of Energy research from Energy Generation to Energy Infrastructure, Energy Use & Demand, and Energy Policy. Within the energy generation area research activities include: Bioenergy, Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage & Conventional Power, Energy from Waste, Nuclear, Solar and Wind. To support the energy research the University provides access to extensive world class innovation facilities to test new energy technologies including the national PACT facilities.
To support the growing needs of the Bioenergy research area within Energy 2050, PACT requires a minimum 155kWth to a maximum 340kWth, ideally 160-220kWth grate boiler for wood chip and wood/biomass pellets (possibly via an interchangeable fuel feed system) to complement its existing facilities. The boiler will primarily support Bioenergy research focused on fuel development and testing, and utilisation in CCS Technologies with a connection (by PACT from spur and valve from boiler’s flue gas duct) to an onsite CO2 capture plant.
