Plans lodged for specialist hospital
Plans have been lodged to build a 106-bed mental health hospital in south Liverpool.A full planning application has been submitted to Liverpool City Council to develop a new mental health unit at Mossley Hill Hospital on Park Avenue near Sefton Park. Mossley Hill Hospital, which specialises in mental health care, spans a total area of 334,628 sq ft.The scheme has been designed by Gilling Dod Architects on behalf of its client, the Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust.The application involves demolishing existing outdated hospital buildings and constructing a new mental health hospital featuring 106 in-patient beds with en-suite facilities. There would be 92 beds for adult acute wards, ten for a learning disabilities ward, and four for an assessment suite.Day spaces, activity rooms, quiet rooms, a gym, a kitchen, a garden, visiting rooms, a multi-faith space, a café and offices are also planned.IBI Group has submitted a planning application on behalf of Liverpool and Sefton Health Partnership.In addition, treatment of mental health patients has advanced significantly since the 1930s, and architectural expertise in delivering purpose-built MHUs has increased greatly. With the right facilities, the care of mental health patients can now be first class.”Liverpool City Council has not yet set a date to consider the application. Subject to securing planning consent, it is envisaged that enabling works for demolition could start at the end of 2017.
