Plans for a massive housing development of more than 200 homes – right next to the former Macaulay Lane tip site – have been recommended for approval.Council officers have told North East Lincolnshire Council’s planning committee that planning permission to build a vast housing estate of 224 should be accepted.Gleeson Homes have lodged the full planning application to build a batch of new affordable houses in Grimsby’s West Marsh. If accepted, the development would be constructed on the boundary of the old Macaulay Lane landfill site on an area of disused allotments and open fields. It is the latest in a stream of applications for developments in or around the former landfill site, which has been blighted with controversy over the years.Twenty years have passed since the first planning application to build on the former tip site was approved. The wasteland was tipped for the site of a new Grimsby Town FC stadium, but did not make it on to a shortlist. A 17-acre country park is maturing there and there are plans for 250 new homes on an adjoining site. But planners set a condition on Millennium Park (Grimsby) Ltd to begin work by January 2017, which now is invalid.Over the past two decades the site has been earmarked for leisure complexes, hotel, shops and housing. And next Wednesday these new plans will go before NELC’s planning committee at 9.30am at Grimsby Town Hall, for consideration. In putting their proposals forward, developers Gleeson have pledged to ensure that 20 per cent of the homes, 44 in total two and three bed semi-detached houses, will be available on a Help To Buy scheme.
