The MSc in Pharmaceutical Analysis is a flagship Master’s course for the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and a priority course for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences in Queen’s University Belfast (Queen’s).
The course was developed in consultation with industry, in response to the globally recognised demand for analytical scientists, and as such it is was designed to be at the forefront of current analytical science and instrumentation. The course has been steadily growing in terms of student numbers, and has been particularly attractive for overseas students.
One of the unique characteristics of the course is the focus on practical, hands-on training to the use of state-of-the-art instrumental techniques. Class sizes to date meant that this could be done in smaller groups across several labs, however, in view of the projected growth (>40 students in 2017-18), and in order not to negatively impact student experience, a modern analytical lab, similar to what graduates will encounter in industry, is required.
The School has identified and renovated a suitable laboratory, which has been equipped with a full AV suite to enable the use of modern teaching tools, such as interactive presentations, VR and multimedia. Apart from its vital importance for the delivery of the MSc course, the new analytical lab will enable the development of new analytical chemistry training pathways for undergraduate students, further enhancing their employability prospects, as analysts are among the most highly sought-after graduates in the UK and overseas.
