Co-working and apartments planned for library site
A grade-II listed library in Leeds could be redeveloped to provide a co-working hub and co-living apartments aimed at young professionals under newly-submitted plans. The former Burley Library in Headingley dates back to 1926. It was closed in February 2016 on health and safety ground but awarded grade II-listed status in 2017. The building was most recently used as the site office for a neighbouring student accommodation development. The Park Lane Group, supported by Yeme Architects, has now lodged a listed-building application with Leeds City Council to convert and extend the building. The proposals cover the conversion of the library building to a co-working, training and enterprise hub. It will provide space for entrepreneurs and freelancers in the area, as well as offering accredited training provision for apprentices and residents.A five-storey extension will also be built, featuring 60 one-bedroom and studio apartments and communal facilities. The residential element is based on a co-living model will be targeted at young professional who have recently moved out of managed student accommodation.Basement car parking for 17 vehicles and cycle storage is also proposed. The site is located between The Glassworks and The Embankment developments, which are also owned by The Park Lane Group, and it is intended that residents will also have access to the facilities in these buildings.
