Saw mill housing redevelopment recommended for approval

The proposed redevelopment for housing of a saw mill close to the River Ure and a registered battlefield is recommended for approval when it goes before councillors (20 February 2018).In November 2017, Pegasus Group submitted plans to Harrogate Borough Council on behalf of Linden Homes for the transformation of Riverside Saw Mills into 87 dwellings.The site currently features a number of former industrial units, with demolition currently underway. It is bounded to the north by the River Ure, Tower Marina and existing buildings.Linden Homes is proposing to construct 84 new properties and the conversion of a barn on the land.A range of properties with between one and five bedrooms will be built, including a 29 affordable housing units.The scheme will go before the council’s planning committee on 20 February 2018 and is recommended for approval in a planning officer’s report, subject to the signing of a section 106 agreement.The application site had been in operation as a mill since 1935 when the Rivercraft Co Ltd started out, before becoming John Boddy Timber.The battle of Boroughbridge took place on 16 March 1322 in an area to the north-east of the saw mills. The conflict followed a decade of antagonism between King Edward II of England and Thomas, Earl of Lancaster.On the day of the battle, a group of rebellious barons supporting the Earl of Lancaster with about 700 knights took on the King’s 4,000 or so soldiers.
