Setback for hotel and retirement housing plans

Plans to develop a new hotel and more than 150 retirement properties at an East York golf club could hit a setback, with councillors recommended to refuse planning permission at a meeting later this week (13 September).GVA submitted an application on behalf of a joint venture between the owners of Cottingham Parks Golf and Leisure Club and Sewell Investments to East Riding of Yorkshire Council earlier this year.Planning consent is sought for a 70-bedroom hotel, an extension to the existing clubhouse and leisure facilities and up to 152 retirement dwellings, including bungalows and apartments, communal areas and a bowling green.The hotel and extension of the golf club improvements are designed to ensure the financial sustainability of the business. The retirement village would support the capital expenditure on the improved facilities.The Cottingham Parks business currently employs 59 staff with 40 per cent of the supply chain based in the area. The scheme could generate between 30 and 45 additional full-time jobs.The council’s planning committee will consider the application on 13 September but a report prepared for the meeting has recommended that planning consent is refused, due to concerns over the residential element.
