100 homes and supermarket plans set for approval

A pair of planning applications for the development of more than 100 new homes and a discount supermarket on the site of a former factory in South Yorkshire are set to get the green light from councillors next week.Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council will consider the applications for development on the former William Freeman off Wakefield Road on 23 October 2018. The factory building has been demolished to prepare the site for redevelopment.Lidl UK is seeking planning permission for a new foodstore on the southern section of the site which could create about 40 full- and part-time jobs.The new supermarket would measure 22,900 sq ft and be served by 127 customer and staff parking spaces and two electric vehicle charging points.The scheme is recommended for approval, subject to conditions, in a planning officer’s report prepared for the meeting.The recommendation has been made despite objections from Asda and The Co-op.An application from Netherton Homes, supported by John R Parley Associates, will also be considered at the meeting.This application seeks outline planning consent for the construction of 102 houses on 6.6-acre section of the former factory site. New areas of green space would also be created.A reported pared for the meeting recommends that this development is also granted planning permission, subject to conditions and the signing of a Section 106 agreement that would secure a 15 per cent affordable housing provision.
