Business case for 2,000 homes scheme set for vote

The business case for the creation of more than 2,000 homes and employment space in Rutland on a soon-to-be-closed Army base is set to be voted on next week.Members of Rutland County Council’s cabinet will debate the plan for the St George’s site near Luffenham at a meeting on Tuesday 18 December.Officers have recommended that the members approve the plan so that it can be submitted by the 1 March 2019 deadline.Work on the masterplan is set to continue ahead of a planning application being submitted to the authority.The meeting comes after the number of houses planned for the site was reduced further at the start of November.In September, the Ministry and Defence (MoD) and Rutland County Council confirmed that, following a consultation, the number of residential properties that would be constructed on the St George’s Barracks site in North Luffenham would be reduced from between 1,500 and 3,500 homes to between 1,500 and 2,700.However, it was revealed last month that the estimate is to be revised down further to be 2,215, meaning the plans have now been reduced by up to 1,285 homes since the project was first announced.
