First phase of playhouse restoration completes

The first stage of the refurbishment of Alnwick Playhouse has been completed by a Newcastle-based building services company.Northern Bear Building Services’ specialist propping team has installed the structural supports that will ensure the facades and other notable features of the arts venue are secured and retained during demolition and removal work.The project will require the Playhouse, which was originally built in 1925, to be closed for a year.When it reopens, it will retain its primary roles as a theatre and cinema and will also house the library and tourist centre.Co-owned by Northumberland Theatre Company and Alnwick District Playhouse Trust, the Playhouse is raising approximately £800,000 to finance a new food and drink area, auditorium seating, lift, studio adaptations and refurbishment, with Northern Bear serving as the project’s main contractor.Northumberland County Council has also supported the project by ensuring the building is water-tight and installing new electrics and heating.
