Plans approved for Horden railway station
A proposal to build a new railway station in Horden, east County Durham, has been given the green light.The £10.55m project, which is being funded by Durham County and the New Stations Fund, seeks to improve transport links to the Horden and Peterlee area.The station will comprise two platforms, accessed by both staircases and ramps, with lighting, waiting shelter, PA system, customer information screens and a CCTV system.An adjoining 139-space car park is also planned for the station.Network Rail said it hopes the station, which was approved by Durham County Council, will facilitate up to 71,000 journeys per year by 2024.The Coalfields Regeneration Trust, which has focused its efforts on Horden over recent years to change perception and encourage investment into the area, welcomed the announcement.
