Plans in for £60m Commonwealth Games swimming pool
A planning application for the £60m state-of-the-art Sandwell Aquatics Centre, which has been earmarked to be used for the Commonwealth Games in 2022 has been submitted.The plans include a 50m Olympic-sized competition swimming pool, a 25m diving pool, a studio pool and 1,000 spectator seats at the Smethwick centre.A total of 4,000 temporary seats will be used for the Commonwealth Games.Alongside the swimming facilities, the centre will feature a dry-dive facility, 108-station gym, a 25-station ladies-only gym, three activity studios, an eight-court sports hall, down from 12, an indoor cycling studio, sauna/steam room and café. The site, at Londonderry Playing Fields, will also include 450 on-site car parking spaces, a football pitch and changing facilities, an improved urban park and children’s play area.
