Nelson Gate scheme set to move forward

The redevelopment of Southampton’s Nelson Gate into a mixed-use scheme featuring offices, a 20-storey residential tower and a hotel could be set to take a step forward as the city council’s cabinet prepares to meet to discuss a potential agreement with the head-lessee at the site.Southampton City Council is the freehold land owner of the Nelson Gate site, which currently comprises a largely vacant office block and a surface car park.Following the administration of the former head-lessee in 2012, the authority has been in discussions regarding its future and an application for the whole site was submitted in December 2018.The redevelopment of Nelson Gate would include the demolition of Grenville House and the conversion of the remaining space in Norwich and Frobisher to provide modern office accommodation, as well as the creation of a link building between the two.The new building would feature commercial space at the ground floor, while the car park would be redeveloped with a 20-stroey residential tower and a three-to-four star hotel.There will also be public realm improvements carried out at Station Plaza.Documents published ahead of the cabinet meeting next week (18 June 2019) revealed the council is prepared to approve a framework for entering into an agreement with the head-lessee, which will include the grant of new leases.The Nelson Gate redevelopment is expected to take place across two or three phases.
