Thumbs-up expected for new secondary school

A secondary school and sixth form which would have space for 1,150 students has been tipped for the go-ahead in Birmingham.Land at Yardley Wood playing field in School Road has been earmarked for the new development for Christ Church CE Secondary Academy.Department for Education is seeking permission from Birmingham City Council for a three-storey main building with a footprint of 29,000 sq ft and a sports hall with more than 18,000 sq ft of floor space.The school would include a number of classrooms, including specialist rooms for food technology, information technology and resistant materials as well as science labs and music rooms.The school would also feature a main hall, library, kitchen, toilets as well offices and meeting rooms for staff and visitors.About 100 staff would be based at the new school which would be due to open in 2021.If approval is granted at a meeting on Thursday 4 July, Willmott Dixon would complete the project as main contractor.
