Airport reveals plans for £2m solar farm

Doncaster Sheffield Airport has revealed plans for a £2m solar farm that will generate about 25 per cent of its energy when operational.Aviation minister Baroness Vere visited the airport as its investors the Peel Group today (1 July 2019) announced plans to build the solar farm.The facility is due to be operational in 2020 and will provide 1.7 MWp of zero carbon energy, saving 220 tonnes of carbon every year – the equivalent of boiling 2.2m kettles every year. It will generate 25 per cent of the airport’s energy.The development forms part of the airport’s 20-year masterplan, with passenger numbers set to soar to 1.45 million this year and to double within the next five years.The aviation minister also witnessed the airport signing up to the Women in Aviation and Aerospace Charter, which makes a commitment to building a more balanced and fair industry for women.
