Green light recommended for redevelopment of former court
Plans for the redevelopment of a former court building to create new apartments and commercials unit look set to get the go-ahead when they go before councillors next week (17 September 2019).CODA Planning, on behalf of Firestone Developments, submitted an application to Sheffield City Council over the summer for the redevelopment of the former Coroners’ Court building. The building was constructed in 1913 by architect FEP Edwards. It featured a coroner’s court, mortuary, post-mortem rooms, viewing chapel, witnesses’ waiting rooms and police accommodation along with a yard and stabling. After sustaining damage in World War II, renovations were made, including youth court facilities and substantial changes to the interiors. The council determined earlier this year that prior approval for the demolition of the building, which is not listed, is not required. The new application seeks planning permission for a new building on between five and seven storeys on the site. This would comprise 74 new apartments, with a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom properties, as well as five flexible commercial units on the ground floor. The scheme also includes secure cycle storage, ancillary facilities and courtyard amenity space. The council’s planning committee will discuss the plans on 17 September and an officer’s report prepared for the meeting recommends that the development is approved, subject to conditions.
