Emerging plans for global centre for rail excellence
Plans to create a global centre of rail excellence near Ystradglynlais have taken a step forward with the submission of an environmental scoping report.The report has been submitted to Powys Council and Neath Port Talbot Council on behalf of Welsh Government by Arup.The centre is planned for site of the Onllwyn and Nant Helen open cast mine, which will continue be operated by Celtic Energy until 2021.If brought forward in its current guise, the site will have two test tracks of loop configuration, one of which will be 4.5km and another at 6.9km. The site will also have storage for rolling stock of up to 400 units.The scheme is to serve prototype, operational transition and initial deployment phases of rail development, in particular for 100mph electric trains and high speed train testing.
