Plans lodged for aparthotel at landmark Leeds building

The proposed conversion of a grade II-listed hotel opposite Leeds Town Hall to create an aparthotel and commercial units has moved forward with the submission of planning applications for the development.Johnson Mowat Planning, on behalf of site owner Khalbros, has submitted full planning and listed building applications to Leeds City Council for the redevelopment of 19-20 East Parade and 161-167 The Headrow.Planning permission is sought for the partial demolition of 19-20 East Parade and 161 The Headrow to make way for a new five-storey building, as well as the conversion of the grade II-listed former Jubilee Hotel.The proposed development would provide 43 apartment hotel rooms as well as 7,300 sq ft of commercial floorspace on the ground and basement levels.The aparthotel is expected to support 12 full-time and six part-time positions.Pre-application plans were presented at a meeting of Leeds City Council’s City Plans Panel in May. Members were supportive of the demolition and proposed aparthotel use, but suggested that further work was required on the design of the new building and its relationship with the former Jubilee Hotel.The former Jubilee Hotel was constructed in 1904 by Thomas Winn & Sons and was previously acquired for £1.9m in October 2017.
