Proposals for key York site up for discussion

Proposals to bring forward the first phase of the redevelopment of a key site in York are set to be discussed by councillors.The City of York Council’s Executive will be asked to consider a range of options for the first phase of the Castle Gateway masterplan at a meeting on 21 January 2019.The scheme aims to create new public spaces, riverside walks, pedestrian/cycle bridges, new affordable council homes and commercial space for small businesses. Planning applications have already been submitted for most of phase one, with decisions expected to be taken later in the year.The development would include the replacement of Castle Car park with a multi-storey car park at St George’s Field, enabling new public space to be created around Clifford’s Tower; a pedestrian cycle crossing over the inner-ring road and a new bridge over the River Foss; and a public park at the rear of the Castle Museum and a riverside pocket park on Piccadilly.A total of 106 new apartments would be developed at Castle Mills, together with new commercial spaces suitable for small independent traders or businesses.The Executive will consider a number of strategies for phase one, with a report prepared for the meeting recommending that the council should fund and manage the construction.
