Cardiff homes plans set for approval

Plans to build new accommodation for older people in Cardiff, which would involve the redevelopment of a former police station and a community centre, are set to be approved.Two separate applications are set to go before the city council’s planning committee later this week (26 February 2020).The larger scheme, for the former St Mellons Youth and Community Centre on Crickhowell Road, proposes the development of 60 self-contained independent living apartments across three linked blocks.It would also include communal facilities such as electric scooter charging, activity rooms and residents’ lounges.The second application has earmarked a former police station in Maefla for 41 apartments.Under the plans, garages on the site would be demolished to make way for the units.The land is immediately north of the existing Maefla House. The plans also propose a roof garden for the new building, as well as updating the Maefla House lounge.Both applications were submitted by the Cardiff Council Housing Development Team and are part of the authority’s plans to build 1,000 new homes by 2022.Both schemes were submitted for planning approval in December following resident consultation events.
