Container scheme on Canvas Works site secures approval

Plans to use shipping containers at a site in Newcastle to create a structure for studios and a number of hospitality uses have secured approval.Filed with Newcastle City Council by Raskl, the plans involve the demolition of the former Canvas Works at 47 to 49 Lime Street in Ouseburn to allow for the erection of 34 steel shipping containers into a three and four storey block, which would be occupied by 24 B1 units and three café/restaurants.The B1 space is intended to be used as affordable space for craft and fashion based industries or more technology-based industries. A terrace level off of the third floor will also be provided.The development would be named VESSL and is designed in a similar vain to existing container developments at The Stack on Pilgrim Street and on the south side of Gateshead Quays.The former Canvas Works building is located at the back of the pavement on Lime Street, with the building dating back to the 1800s.It is expected that about 50 jobs would be created as a result of the development.A report that was scrutinised by planners on 21 February 2020 recommended that the plans be approved, subject to conditions.
