A £4.1m Lottery grant has been awarded for mixed-use plans to regenerate a former steelworks site in Wales and create 450 new homes. The plans for the former British Steelworks site at Brymbo, near Wrexham, took a major step forward this week.Key community facilities will also be developed at the site including a new school, visitor attraction, medical centre, community hub and business space. The five-year project will create new jobs, training and apprenticeships and provisions will be made to protect a 300 million year-old fossil site that was discovered during open cast mining in 2003.Brymbo Heritage Trust (BHT) will carry out the development, supported by landowner Brymbo Developments Ltd (BDL).The site has been decontaminated since the closure of the Brymbo Steelworks in 1992, and it was acquired by BDL in the same year.BDL also owns another 300 acres immediately to the west of the site.
