Plans submitted for vision of new Aberdeen Market and civic space

Plans for the transformation of Aberdeen Market into a retail and food venue with exhibition space facing have been revealed.The new glass and granite building will face on to a civic space for public art, events and markets.Developer Patrizia’s plans, which have been three years in the making, will go before councillors on 30 April with a recommendation to approve from Aberdeen City Council planners.The ground floor of the new building, facing Market Street, will incorporate a business lounge with retail, café and exhibition space connected to outdoor seating and meeting areas. Retail and café units will face Hadden Street and the Green. An underground car park with 126 spaces, some with electric car-charging and cycle facilities is also proposed.Patrizia is also behind plans to transform the adjoining former BHS store, which closed in 2016, into a restaurant and leisure venue. The two projects would link Union Street and the Merchant Quarter.Aberdeen Inspired, the city centre business improvement district which represents the interest of over 900 businesses is backing the market planning application.
