Brighton co-working and living scheme set for approval

Plans to knock down a number of garages and workshops in Brighton to make way for a co-working and co-living scheme look set to be approved.An application for the scheme at 19-24 Melbourne Street was filed by Brundell Property and Funki Co-living Brighton Ltd in June 2019.They include the demolition of a number of single-storey workshops and garages and a two-storey workshop on Melbourne Street, which back onto the grade II-listed Woodvale Cemetery. The space above one car repair business is used as a martial arts club.The mixed-use scheme would span about 42,000 sq ft and would be between four and six storeys high.The development would comprise co-working space with a cafe and management office on the ground floor and a gym in the basement which would be occupied by the martial arts club.The upper floors would provide 83 single co-living rooms with shared kitchen and dining areas, along with a roof garden.The application has been recommended for the green light ahead of a Brighton & Hove City Council meeting on 8 July 2020.Final approval is subject to the completion of a section 106 agreement that would secure financial contributions towards affordable housing and enhancing open public spaces.
