Approval nears for mixed-use Brighton scheme

Controversial proposals to knock down a number of houses in Brighton to make way for a mixed-use scheme are set to be approved.Under the plans by Martin Homes, six dwellings on Portland Road would be demolished and replaced with a four-storey building.The scheme would comprise up to 47 residential units and almost 18,000 sq ft of commercial space.It initially proposed the erection of two buildings up to six storeys with 91 dwellings and 26,300 sq ft of commercial space, but has been amended.The fresh plans have been recommended for approval ahead of a Brighton & Hove City Council planning meeting today (8 July 2020).A document published ahead of the meeting revealed the application attracted more than 230 objections.Final approval is subject to the completion of a section 106 agreement. The heads of terms include 40 per cent affordable housing and a contribution towards sustainable transport.
