Kier starts work on £6.7m modernisation and expansion programme at Welsh medium secondary school in Swansea

Kier, a leading provider of educational buildings, has been appointed by Swansea Council to deliver a multi-million pound modernisation and expansion programme at Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr, which when complete will provide c.200 additional school places. To celebrate the start of construction, Kier alongside members of the council, governors and teachers, held a socially distanced turf cutting at the site in Gowerton.As part of the first phase of this project, a new teaching block will be constructed and will be ready before the start of the 2021/22 academic year. The two-storey building will have first-class facilities, including general teaching classrooms, a new kitchen, canteen and drama hall.Phase two will modernise and transform the school’s existing drama studio and kitchen to provide enhanced teaching spaces. This is due for completion in Winter 2021.Procured through the South West Wales Regional Contractor Framework, Kier will work with a local supply chain to deliver this project and last month, Kier, Swansea Council and Business Wales arranged a virtual meet the buyer event with local suppliers from surrounding areas of Swansea and other parts of West Wales.All works will be carried out in line with current Welsh Government guidance and in compliance with Kier’s Site Operating Procedures. Kier will work with the school and local community to carry out works in a considerate manner in order to cause minimal disruption to its pupils and teachers together with the local community.
