Extra care apartments proposed for chocolate factory site

Plans have been lodged for a development of extra care apartments opposite the former Terry’s Chocolate Factory site in York.McCarthy & Stone Retirement Lifestyles and Henry Boot Developments have submitted an application to City of York Council for the development of a surfaced car park opposite for site of the factory on Bishopthorpe Road.Planning permission is sought for a five-storey building comprising 43 one-bedroom and 30 two-bedroom extra care apartments.A decked car park featuring 92 spaces for use in connection with the Chocolate works redevelopment schemes is also proposed.The retirement development would employ about 20 full-time staff. It would be operated by YourLife Management Services.The former Terry’s of York site has been redeveloped to provide accommodation comprising of housing and apartment, as well as a convenience store for the residents. The factory itself has been converted into apartments, and the factory headquarters has become a care home.The application has been supported by planning consultancy The Planning Bureau and architects’ practice DB3.
