Description: The Awarding Authority, led by Mayor James Palmer, has today voted to approve the scaling up of community-led housing across specified location.The Combined Authority will provide start-up grants of £5,000 along-side technical support to community-led housing groups to set up their own Community Land Trusts in every area of the region. Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are one form of community-led housing. They are a way for local communities to come together and establish a not-for-profit organisation to develop, own, and manage housing provision for the benefit of the community. The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority have a dedicated community housing team who can help individuals or community groups looking to start new community-led housing projects across the region with practical steps such as seeking planning permission and obtaining grant funding. Individuals and community groups interested in community housing are urged to get in touch with the Combined Authority to find out how they can be helped. CLTs already exist across the region and the ambition is that by the Combined Authority boosting its support, there will be many more set up in the coming months. On 22nd January this year, Haddenham Community Land Trust in Ely, East Cambridgeshire celebrated handing the keys to their first two properties over to tenants, with three more to follow in February. The Combined Authority provided Haddenham CLT with £6.5m in grant funding to set up and will provide 19 properties to local people.Work has also recently begun to carve out allotments on a CLT in Great Shelford, South Cambridgeshire. This is ahead of the official Start on Site, which will see the CLT build 21 alms-houses, adjacent to their existing estate of 32 similarly affordable units on More’s Meadow. Development is scheduled to start in early 2021 and the homes will be available for occupation in the second half of 2022.The Combined Authority has provided Great Shelford CLT with technical advisory support and just over £1m in grant funding. Designed for sustainability, the homes will achieve high standards of energy efficiency and keep residents’ running costs low. Air source heat pumps will be used to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and mechanically ventilated heat recovery will capture heat whilst providing good ventilation. Planning approval includes the provision of new allotments, orchards, parkland, a community garden, the planting of native trees and hedgerows, and enhanced public access to the surrounding green belt.
