Go-ahead secured for hundreds of homes

The go-ahead has been secured for proposals aiming to redevelop a site in Wolverhampton to provide hundreds of homes and new commercial space.Placefirst is sought planning approval from City of Wolverhampton Council to transform the site of Union Mill and Lower Horseley Fields to provide 366 residential units.Union Mill comprises a collection of former mill and industrial buildings to the north western corner of the site.Lower Horseley Fields historically contained the Shakespeare Iron Foundry and the Griffin Works, amongst other industrial operations. The remaining buildings were demolished in 2000 and the cleared site has been used by Dunton Environmental since 2016 as a waste treatment centre.The residential element of the proposal includes 359 apartments and seven houses, which will be a mix of one, two and three bedrooms.Flexible non-residential floorspace is proposed within 16 and 16a Union Mill Street, comprising commercial, business and services uses. 16 Union Mill Street would be used as a site management office.Ten new buildings, ranging from two to six storeys are proposed, with three existing historic buildings being retained, including the former Cheese and Butter Warehouse and slip dock buildings, which would be converted for residential use.16b Union Mill Street would be demolished and replaced with a three-storey residential building.278 secure cycle spaces and 88 car parking spaces are provided. The proposals include a resident car sharing club which has two vehicles.The scheme has been recommended for approval, subject to conditions.
