Sunderland reacts to £1bn Nissan investment

Businesses and authorities in Sunderland have reacted to Nissan’s plant to create a £1bn electric vehicle hub in the city, which could create thousands of UK jobs.Nissan unveiled Nissan 36Zero earlier this week (1 July 2021) in partnership with Envision AESC, which has vowed to invest £450m to build the UK’s first gigafactory on the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP).Sunderland City Council leader Graeme Miller hailed the role the authority played in securing the significant project, which includes shaping the plans for the Microgrid.Nissan supplier Commercial Maintenance Services UK Ltd installs, maintains, and repairs heating, electrical and plumbing systems at the giant Sunderland plant.Steve Turner of workers’ union Unit said the investment is a “vital step forward” in securing gigafactories for other areas of the UK.
